About Suzanne McKay

Suzanne McKay I spent part of my childhood surrounded by the beauty of the Mojave Desert, around Victorville, California, and spent another part of my childhood in Northern Illinois farm country, in Ridgefield, Crystal Lake, and Belvidere. As a result, I love depicting Country scenes, and, particularly a subject I call "A Vanishing America."

Drawing was what I did as soon as I could hold a pencil. At about 15, my brother (also an artist) gave me a set of professional watercolors. I was thrilled and immediately felt a new sense of seriousness about my art. I even sold a few at county fairs and to friends, but for pretty cheap.

I attended college at B.I.O.L.A. (The Bible Institute of Los Angeles), where I minored in Art and joined The La Mirada Artists' Colony. After college, I became an active member of The Downey Artists' League, where a few of us members exhibited our work on weekends on Wilshire Boulevard.

Moving to Portland in 1971, I joined a group of artists who were forming a new art club, which became the Portland Fine Arts Guild, for which I served as Program Chairman, Judging Committee Chairman, and President. For five years, I taught classes at Mount Hood Community College (Gresham, Oregon), in Watercolor, Life Drawing, Drawing, and Basic Design. For many years since then, I have taught Watercolor workshops, Outdoor Painting workshops, private and semi-private lessons, and I have taught Children's Art classes, and juried Children's Art Shows,
.
Even though Watercolor was my forte for years, I love to paint in Oil, Acrylic, and Pastel, as well. And, in the past few years, I really enjoy Photography, both realistic and abstract.

Basically self-taught, I have been privileged to take workshops from such artists as Darwin Duncan, Phil Tyler, Sharon Smith, George Hamilton, Del Gish, and Eric Jacobsen.

Here in Oregon, I have held past memberships in The Oregon Society of Artists, The Watercolor Society of Oregon, and The Painters' Showcase.

I am currently a member of the Alla Prima Painters Portland group.

The DOING of painting, for me, is as pleasurable as viewing the finished work. This is especially true when I am painting outdoors, solo, or with artists in the Alla Prima Group. My INSPIRATION to paint is from being overwhelmed by the beauty God has created for us, and having a desire to transfer some of these scenes to paper or canvas, to share with others.

I hope you enjoy my work, whether it be to just view it, or to purchase cards, prints, a framed piece, or an original. If you have any questions or comments, I would be happy to hear from you.
