This was done (90%) on location at a Lavender Farm on Sauvie's Island, Oregon, with a group of local plein-aire painters, Alla Prima Portland. Finished in studio. I loved how the dirt road pulled the eye in, and the row of blue hills (added later) for repetition of the subtle horizontal lines already present.
I spent part of my childhood surrounded by the beauty of the Mojave Desert, around Victorville, California, and spent another part of my childhood in Northern Illinois farm country, in Ridgefield, Crystal Lake, and Belvidere. As a result, I love depicting Country scenes, and, particularly a subject I call "A Vanishing America." Drawing was what I did as soon as I could hold a pencil. At about 15, my brother (also an artist) gave me a set of professional watercolors. I was thrilled and immediately felt a new sense of seriousness about my art.
